26th - 28th March

Birding has got a bit more interesting over the past few days, with easterlies building up until 28th when year ticks came rolling in all day!

26th was fairly slow, with just three Linnets on the Obs track and one Puffin passing the sea watch hide being the highlights.

Intermittent showers on 27th meant census was short-lived, but the west coast did produce one Snow Bunting.

With new volunteer Craig finally having been shown all the census areas, 28th was our first day of almost full island coverage, and it turned out to be a good day to have picked to get started! Highlights from the day included two Hawfinches (one at Holland, one at the airfield), a Lapland Bunting at Hooking, a Brambling at Snetten, a Grey Wagtail at the Bothy, four Dunnocks (one at Lurand pund, one by T1, one in Holland, one at Gue Park), a Wheatear in the Bewan pund, a Greenshank at Cauldhaim, a Sparrowhawk over T5, a Chaffinch at Neven, four Snow Bunting, a Jack Snipe at Ancum, a Woodcock at Lochend, and a Short-eared Owl at Nether Linnay. Totals of commoner migrants include, 5 Chiffchaff, 14 Goldcrests, and 13 Robins.

With the weather set to bring more easterlies and rain, we can't help but feel a bit more excited and optimistic for the coming days.
