27th June - 20th July
I didn't realise it'd been quite so long without an update, so apologise for that! The end of June and into July has been hectic, lots of chick ringing has taken with Arctic Terns and Black Guillemots taking up much of our time and efforts. Maddy has been off in Aberdeen completing her BA training for the SFRS and the rest of the team has held the fort, although a brief excursion on 14th and 15th July to Papa Westray for a certain Blue-cheeked Bee-eater was deemed a worthy cause to leave our posts. We also said our goodbye's to young Bobbi, we thank them for their efforts and will hopefully see them again soon, a massive thanks for finding the Semipalmated Sandpiper, an island tick for all!
June ended with a Grey Wagtail at Brides, a Reed Warbler briefly at Senness, Quails at the school and the observatory while the Pectoral Sandpiper and Semipalmated Sandpiper remained in situ, the latter still present deep into July.
July started in style, a second Little Ringed Plover was on the Links on 1st and a Crossbill at Milldam, both relocated the following day to Bewan and Southness respectively. A Spotted Flycatcher was in Ancum Willows on 3rd and in an interesting turn the long-staying Grey-headed Wagtail had been joined by a juvenile Yellow Wagtail, now around Westness. The first Storm Petrel was seen on 4th, trapping session have taken place since that date recording 37 birds in three nights. A female Red-backed Shrike was in Holland on 6th-8th July. A Greenshank around Gretchen and Black Redstart at Neven were both present on 10th. The 12th saw an adult Little Gull at Bewan amongst the Kittiwakes. While Sooty Shearwaters was seen on 17th and 19th. On the moth front its been slow, but a Straw Dot trapped overnight on 13th July along with a Notocelia cynosbatella were both new for North Ronaldsay.
