20th-23rd January

A few rather rough days of weather have meant theres been little change in the ornithological landscape. The only birds the 20th had to offer were 2 1st winter Glaucous Gulls on the Seal Skerry. The following day was a complete washout coupled with howling winds meant viewing anything was nearly out of the question, the best offering was 4 Goldeneye and 12 Tufted Ducks on Bewan. The following day was much more positive experience, the Seal Skerry was bustling with Gulls, the pick of which were 4 Glaucous Gulls and 2 Iceland Gulls (all 1st W). A Buzzard (or the Buzzard) appeared over the Obs in the afternoon causing pandemonium amongst the wintering wildfowl and waders. A couple of Woodcock were at Holland and Sangar respectively. The final offering of the day was 17 Black-tailed Godwits on Brides, these represent only the 2nd ever January record for this species. A much nicer day would follow on the 23rd despite intermittent snow/hail showers, a lone 1st Winter Glaucous Gull was on the Seal Skerry again, a hybrid Shoveler x Mallard was on Bewan in the morning with 14 genuine Shoveler. The afternoon saw the hail and snow depart and a quick walk around the obs croft produced a Woodcock, 31 Twite, 3 Chaffinch, a Common Redpoll and a very brief flight view of the Woodlark that seemed to vanish off towards Kirbest.

Hello. I asked this via Facebook but I think no one has seen it. Can you advise me on Linnets at North Ron?
We ringed Linnet AJD6518 on 26 November 2018 as a 3 male at a winter set aside plot that held several hundred Linnets until the early spring March time of 2019. with a wing length of 87mm it was subject to a DemOn query.
The Linnet now adult male was recaptured at North Ron on 3 later occasions - 7 May 2019, 28 June 2019 and 8 May 2020. Fairly clearly a breeding and returning male?
Our Linnet project at Pilling Marsh, South Morecambe Bay has been running for 5 years now, unfortunately truncated on two occasions by first Bird Flu and lately 2021 by the virus. We have no recaptures of AJD 6518 despite many, many visits to the same plot in 2018, 2019 and 2020. In fact we have very few recaptures full stop. We have 800 Linnet captures from the site with now 6 in the North of Scotland.
If you don't mind I have few questions following the latest notification.
Do you catch many Linnets at North Ron during the winter? If so how many? Is there a wintering population on the island? Is Holland House a roost site for Linnets? I would be most grateful for any other information on Linnets. You can PM me if this is better.
Out of interest, my only visit to North Ron was way back when I had the pleasure of a few ringing ticks and the surprise of pulling a Pine Bunting from the net – a good ringing tick for Kevin at that time.
Many thanks. Phil Slade. Is it possible you could private message me? Alternatively, post a reply on my blog https://anotherbirdblog.blogspot.com

Hi Phil,
Hopefully this finds you okay! The Linnets on the island leave over the winter and usually return sometime in March in dribs and drabs. Holland is not only a roost site but their main breeding site on the island.
Since 1987 we have ringed just over 7000 Linnets here but they haven't bred until fairly recently (In the grand scheme of things) but have largely replaced Twite as a breeder on the island. As previously mentioned Holland is the main site but birds do breed elsewhere on the island with Ancum Willows probably being the next most likely spot to find breeding birds. They've been on a steady increase since the late 90's to early 00's and now roost flocks can easily reach 300-400 birds post breeding.
Hope this is helpful, we usually pick up the Facebook messages so I'll try and find it and give you my email address for any further questions :)
All the best
George
