19th August

Wow! What a day, one of the most impressive August 'falls' in recent years with passerine migrants quite literally everywhere! Headlining was an elusive Greenish Warbler in thistle fields at Stennabreck but perhaps more memorable were at least 6 Wrynecks spread about the isle. Other highlights included a Marsh Harrier roaming the north end, a Common Rosefinch at the Beacon, Corncrake at Stennabreck, 2 Barred Warblers, the Marsh Warbler still at Barrenha and the adult American Golden Plover still near the Lighthouse. Perhaps even more talked about will be the days totals for common species with passerines returning tallies of 4 Redstarts, 19 Whinchats, 51 Wheatears, a Tree Pipit, 4 Sedge Warblers, 3 Reed Warblers, 24 Garden Warblers, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 2 Whitethroats, 2 Wood Warblers, an impressive 74 Willow Warblers, 17 Pied Flycatchers and 2 Spotted Flycatchers. Waders were represented by 95 Ruffs, 27 Black-tailed Godwits, a Greenshank, 9 Common and 5 Green Sandpipers and there were also 4 Kestrels and 3 Common Terns. Once again Butterfly's were also evident with 10 Painted Ladies and 7 Red Admirals. A few beers and we'll do it all again tomorrow...

Might have known that all the excitement would wait until just after I'd gone. P
