16th-18th May

A much quieter look to the previous few days after a busy week or so. With the Wagtail from the 15th still fresh in our minds setting out to find it again on 16th felt like a priority but this proved to be a fruitless endeavour and the bird seems to have moved on.

The 16th saw very little in the way of new birds, the Dotterels remained and were still present on 18th, a Collared Dove was seen around Holland and the ringtail Hen Harrier was still bombing around. An unstreaked Acro was seen very briefly around Brides but vanished into the middle loch where we left it so not to disturb our breeding waders and wildfowl. Otherwise a female Blackcap and a Lesser Whitethroat in Ancum were the only other highlights.

The following day was oddly better but a deluge of rain at around 2pm cut birding short, before the rain however up to three Sparrowhawks were present, a unseasonal male Yellowhammer was found singing around Howar, two Little Terns were around Hooking and a Wood Sandpiper flew South down over the Broch picking up the second year tick of the day.

A very quiet day followed the rain, with a pair of Goldfinch in Holland, a Pink-footed and Canada Goose around Peckhole and the Yellowhammer had re-located itself to Claypows. We're hoping for better in the coming days but with little change in the weather it could be a slow few days, that said this is the Northern Isles and you never know!
