31st March - 2nd April

Light westerlies and bright sunshine on 31st meant there was a clear out of a fair few migrants, but Common Scoter was added to the year list when two were seen distantly off the broch. Also added to the year list was Swallow, the earliest ever island record by three days. Other highlights from the day include the Black Redstart at the Broch being resighted, a male Blackcap at Senness, a Brambling and two Chaffinch at Holland as well as the two Hawfinch still, and five Rook and two Jackdaw flew north over Ancum. An evening nets session was predictably quiet given the clear out and because a smart male Sparrowhawk was patrolling the garden.

The first day of April saw another big clear out with no sightings of particular note.

2nd April followed suit but one of the Hawfinches was resighted in Holland garden, a Black Redstart was seen at Tor Ness, and a Grey Wagtail was on the coast by the airfield.

With the next few days set to be very windy, it seems our first small fall of migrants may be over just as quickly as it began, but we can't complain about what we've had so early on in the year!
