21st -24th July
As we now move away from the first round of seabird ringing, more time has been put into birding the island again, with 21st proving there to be a few bits about. An Osprey cruised up the Links early on, and elsewhere there were two Little Gull (one on a sea watch, where three Sooty Shearwater were also seen, and one at Brigg), and a Greenshank flew south over Sandar.
On 22nd a sea watch produced a year tick of Cory's Shearwater when one flew north. Also seen were 175 Storm Petrel, 10 Sooty Shearwater, 25 Manx Shearwater, 95 Puffin, 156 Razorbill/Guillemot and at least four Orca and ten Risso's Dolphin.
Another species was added to the year list on 23rd when a Roseate Tern was found whilst carrying out an Arctic Tern survey on Tor Ness. A Kestrel was at Lenswick. Overnight Storm Petrel ringing produced our first Leach's Petrel of the year trapped in the early hours of 24th, and 34 Storm Petrel were also trapped and ringed.
