9th August

The day's highlight came as big surprise with a smart 1st summer Sabine's Gull found resting on the rocks opposite the Observatory; it was seen just after the ferry had come in so possibly had followed the boat in before showing well for half an hour before heading off across the bay to seemingly land on Stromness Point but was not seen again.   There was a couple of new birds on the land as well with a Garden Warbler trapped at Holland first thing and our first juvenile Willow Warbler of the autumn near Ancum.   A Common Redpoll, three Ruff and 13 Purple Sandpipers were also seen.
